We just toured 2 similar looking forts built by the Spanish in 1539 in Puerto Rico. They also were not taken in battle until 1898 when America defeated the Spanish and took the island. It was a valiable port because it was a gateway to the Carribbean for merchant ships. Quite impressive. They were called El Moro and San Cristibal.
