December 7, 2024

Wow,   time does go by!    I had been writing some notes on the rest of our trip south and added some when we arrived,  but never updated the blog.   So I guess it’s time.   Travel notes start here where I left off on the last update:   So after a night in Olive Branch MIssissippi we had some breakfast and started heading southeast across Mississippi.  I22 to US 45 are very nice roads and there were low volumes of cars,  so it was a relaxing ride.   Again, very pretty color in the trees.  We had about 6 hours planned for that day, at the top end of our time in the car.  A couple of hours in we found a Love’s Travel Stop to fill up and stretch our legs. Route US 45 travels from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to Mobile Alabama and we have been on it many times in Wisconsin.  What is odd about route US 45 in Mississippi is that while it is a divided 4 lane road there are very few gas stations and restaurants along the road.   And NO state rest stops or picnic areas.  So getting close to 4 hours in we needed a break.  We took a side trip into Quitman Mississippi, a small town with a little restaurant that showed up on our maps.  Cozette’s is in what was once a gas station and serves homemade fast food.   Run by 2 sisters who were inspired by their grandmother (Cozette).   We were welcomed when we walked in the door and in the small confines had a good conversation with one of the owners.   Homemade unsweetened tea and lemonade and some wings gave us a break before we were back on the road.  South Mississippi going into Alabama does not look prosperous.  Lot’s of shacks in the woods and manufactured homes.  Going into Alabama the divided 4 lane goes to a 2 lane highway but still a pretty easy ride.  We rode near Vinegar Bend Alabama and through Citronelle, an area my Great Grandparents farmed and some of my Grandfather’s brothers and sisters are buried.  US 45 did take us into Mobile and then I-10 across the bay to Daphne where we called it a night.  Some drinks and soup at a restaurant near the hotel and then watch the University of Wisconsin football game.  The next morning was breakfast and on the road to Gainesville Florida.Staying under our 6 hours and leaving just over 4 hours the next day.  We have stayed in Gainesville before  and the Fairfield Suites was as good as it was in the past.   And 4 minutes away to Swamphead Brewery, which we also have visited in the past.   They have a nice beer list with a diverse selection including some good sours.   The vibe is relaxing and on a Sunday locals just chilling with their beers and dogs.   We were too late for the brunch food truck but managed to get a pizza delivered that we shared with the bartenders.  So we relaxed, we had a good night back at the hotel and were ready for the morning drive to Boynton Beach.   It is mostly Florida Tollway  to home and an easy drive.  We made it home and unloaded the car, uncovered the furniture, and have been settling in since.  It was good to get back even though it takes awhile to unpack and get comfortable again.   It is good to see old friends again and catch up.   We have had our first grill outs with neighbors.   We visited a couple of favorite places and did the Saturday morning market in Delray.  We are blessed to have so many good people we can call friends.   I have done a little garden work and will got Marie’s condo ready for her.   Marie and MJ arrived on Thanksgiving.  Their flights went well and arrived a few minutes early into West Palm after a stop in Atlanta.     We had most of the meal ready and fired up the oven and the grill and had our Thanksgiving dinner.   For the weekend we were able to meet with our old friend Audrey and get to our favorite brewery before MJ headed back on Sunday.    So time has continued to fly by as I come up with projects that needed to be done.  We helped decorate the Association Clubhouse which was a fun evening, and Chris Marie and I put up some lights in our courtyard.   We have some cocktail hours and there goes the time!  Last night we caught a drone show,  our neighbors saw it start and alerted us.  We guess it had to do with the city tree lighting,  it was amazing.   A figure in the sky would start to scatter and dim and another took it’s place.    Today is the Boynton Beach Christmas Parade.  So we made it to Farmers Market this morning and now the Federal Highway in front of us is closed until 9pm tonight as bands start to gather and get directed to their starting points.   We have had some cool nights,  well not quite what we see up north but hey, 62 feels pretty cold!    Get ready for the season and take care!

2024 October 25th, Friday

We had a wonderful time with Bev and Wally in St Louis.   Wally picked out great places for us to eat, we enjoyed the great weather, time on the deck by the fire reminiscing about the 46 years we have known each other.   We were able to see their new beautiful home, and just relaxed.  Thanks Bev and Wally.   After a few nights it was time to give them a break and hit the road.   We headed south. My initial plan this year was to leave St Louis and head east through Tennessee, but after hurricane Helene that would have taken us through areas of East Tennessee and Georgia that were hard hit,   so instead we went through Missouri, Arkansas, and Tennessee into Mississippi just south of Memphis.   It was a good ride. The autumn color in the trees continued, with different types of trees giving us different oranges and yellows.  We knew we were in the south when we saw the cotton fields being harvested.  It is always neat to see ‘snow’ covered fields and rolls of cotton.   All along the highway is lined with white tufts of cotton that have been blown there by the wind.  There was also a lot of acreage of soybeans being harvested.  The National Soybean Festival is an annual event held in Portageville, Missouri.  We made it through Memphis traffic to land in Olive Branch Mississippi.  The south side of Memphis for an easy start in the morning.  I had intended to go a little further south but found small hotels at $1000 a night, apparently Old Miss has a football game tomorrow.  So instead Olive Branch where we had a walk through the parking lot for a cocktail and a steakhouse,  which proved welcoming and tasty.  In the morning a light breakfast and further south.

2024 October 23

So as of the last blog we had gotten home after Labor Day from MJ and John’s house.  September went by quickly as it was a beautiful fall in Wisconsin.   Temperatures remained well above normal most of the month.   I golfed later than …..   Probably ever.     Even when the mornings were cold, and the sunrise kept getting later,  the sun was warm and felt great.    Chris and I had some time to relax and start to plan for our future – Washington Island and heading to Florida.  I was able to attend the Packers game against the Colts and cheer the team on to a win.   It was a warm day at Lambeau with water being sold out in the 4th quarter.   You won’t hear that often at Lambeau.  We had a great day but the heat even made the beer go down slowly by the end of the day.   I made it to see a Wisconsin release of the movie ‘Just a bit outside’ about the 1982 Brewers.  It was great, especially for a fan from 1982 who knew the players being interviewed.  Well Done.  Our friend Jeff came up from Illinois for a couple of days and we had some golf, some food and some beers.   In October we joined our annual trip to Washington Island.  A celebration of Janet and Steve’s anniversary,  we have become good friends with their friends.  It was another successful long weekend.  From meeting at a micro brewery and lunch,  to the theme of black tie New Years Eve party, hiking, biking, eating and drinking.   A super time on the Island.  And the timing was perfect for full color in the trees,   It has been a beautiful fall.  Then back to Oshkosh to unpack and start packing.   Luckily with still that good weather,  I did get out to golf again with John.   Chris and I planned out a few things we want to move to Florida, sort through our clothes -what needs to go?   We are traveling with a little less baggage than past years.  So Sunday Oct 20 we were on our way – to Milwaukee.  My Brother and his wife Claire were celebrating their 50th anniversary that day or we would have already been on the road.   It was a chance to celebrate with them,  and they provided a lunch and admission to the Sunset Playhouse.  My brother is the Master Carpenter there,  he volunteers and builds most of the sets they need for any given play.  We had a wonderful time seeing family and the play 9-5 was very entertaining.  Thanks Skip and Claire, and they said it would never last.    After a night in Milwaukee we were heading south,  well actually mostly West,  but still south.   We made a stop in New Glarus Wisconsin to have a beer at New Glarus brewery.   It was Chris’s lucky day on Monday because she loves watching the bottling line and it was running full speed!  We spent a little time and then on to Cedar Rapids Iowa.   A relaxing ride through the rolling countryside, with corn being harvested and the trees in lovely color.   New Glarus is the Swiss town that Chris’s grandmother took her to when Chris was small, and driving out into the countryside we could see why the Swiss settlers were reminded of their homeland. A warm sunny October drive, we crossed the Mississippi into more color and rolling hills of corn fields.  A stay in Cedar Rapids Iowa was the right distance to drive on a Monday.  We had a great stay and then headed south the the St Louis area.  Currently we are staying with old friends Wally and Bev for a few nights.    Then on to the next phase of our trip.

2024, September 12 Thursday

So Thursday August 22 we were off again.  The night before my Society of Oshkosh Brewers (SOB’s) had their annual picnic that we attended.   The food was great the beers awesome!    Not too many because I had to pack the car and drive in the morning.    We took off from Oshkosh and had a hotel booked in Sault Ste Marie  Ontario.   I like to cross the border on the first day of travel and have that behind us,  and we did that roughly 6 hours later.   Which the time seems worse because we lose an hour on the way there!    We tried a new hotel this year and we liked it a lot.   We like to arrive and check in and take a little time to relax.   Then time for a cocktail and something to eat,  and this Best Western had a very nice pub and restaurant attached.  Some good conversation with the bartender,   good drinks and food,  then relaxing in a nice room.   The next morning breakfast at the hotel and on the road to Sudbury.   A little delay for paving and only one lane open for a long stretch, but nothing terrible.  If you haven’t traveled north in Ontario you may not realize that when you are on King’s Highway 17 and run into a traffic problem,   you do not move over to the next parallel road,   You are on THE road.  It is a pretty ride but don’t expect to quickly run into a gas station or rest stop.  Most small towns, like in the US, have local stations and restaurants that are closed.  Going from the UP of Michigan to Ontario is pretty seamless,  other than a customs checkpoint.  But still a pretty easy drive and we landed in Sudbury in the late afternoon to be greeted by Homer and Judy, Ron and Verna also came down from Temagami.  We were treated like royalty.  The start of our food and drink orgy.  Homer planned out and cooked wonderful food,  while we looked on.   We did a little sightseeing and 2 nights flew by.   On Sunday we were off to Temagami to take in the Carr’s beautiful gardens,  and of course food.   Fresh cut potato fries and gravy and cheese poutine.  With fresh veggies and steaks, and that was after appetizers!     It went on from there.   We were privileged to have Snug neighbors Bob and Sandi join us on Monday.   We all spent a lot of time catching up and Verna fed (overfed) us again.   It was wonderful to spend time catching up with old friends.  But we had a plan and Tuesday we were heading south.  Thanks to our travel advisor Joy we decided on St Jacobs Ontario as our next destination.  You know we want to limit our hours in the car so St Jacobs was about the right distance from Temagami.  We had reserved a bed and breakfast in this Mennonite area.  We arrived too late in the afternoon to take in the local farmers market,  but were welcomed by our hosts and were able to walk to the business district.   We found good food, a brewery and a market open.   In the morning we had a Traditional British Breakfast (our host was from Britain)  which was filling,  and we were able to walk the district again and see shops that were not open the evening before.   After helping out the local economy we were off to the West.   Our next stop was Sarnia, Ontario.   A crossing point between the countries, we wanted one more visit before coming back in country.   We were privileged to have dinner with friends from Snug, as Joy brought Wayne and Elaine into town.   Wayne and Elaine were friends with my Uncle in Florida and then with us.  And now Joy has taken the Canadian mantle in Snug along with Paul.   We had a wonderful evening with them and Wayne and Elaine looked and sounded great.  We enjoyed catching up.   That was the end of our Canadian trip, as the morning brought us to cross the border.  We wanted to cross on Thursday,  as last year on Friday before Labor day took 3 hours;  this day was much better.  We crossed in the morning and found a local cafe for breakfast in the Port Huron area.  Homey and excellent on our trip to MJ and John’s house.  We had a plan there to tackle the painting of their cedar fence.  Their side had been stained in the past and was looking in need of help, and the neighbors side had never been painted.   Some patching and structural help  and then John and I spent 2 days of painting.   It looks great and a feeling of accomplishment that we celebrated.   We visited new and old favorites and did some grilling.   And after Labor Day heading home.   As is normal we skip Chicago traffic and limit our driving; so we stop in the UP of Michigan.  Another night and then home to Oshkosh. So home to Oshkosh for a few days and then a short trip.  Old friends Bev and Wally rented a cottage on Shawano Lake to have a week to visit with Bev’s family.  They invited us to come up so we spent a few days with them.    Pontoon rides, more food and drink, and lot’s of catching up with each other.   We had a wonderful time.   We came home to make it to our doctors appointments,  and yes we need to stop eating.   Also when we came home there was a little excitement in the neighborhood.  Next to our apartment complex was a farmhouse and barn,  which we guess was probably the owner of the property that this complex is built on.   But this is no longer outside the city and property is probably worth a lot on a busy street.   A large crane has been working around the barn and they already had leveled the house.   They took some large areas of barn boards off and I thought they were going to salvage the wood.   But not a lot, yesterday they pulled some inside structure out and today they worked around the bottom until they were ready to bring it down on itself.   A lot of cleanup yet to do,  I salivate at some of the large wooden beams,  but my time is long past to do anything with it!

After we returned from our Western trip we had a week of settling back in.  I got some rounds of golf in.   Friends Judy and Pres came into the area and we golfed a couple of courses as well as spending some time at their campsite! It was fun to be back at High Cliff State Park.  By the end of the week we were on the road again,  heading to Michigan to be in Sterling Heights for MJ’s birthday and the 4th of July.  We had a great time as usual,  with grill outs and visits to both new and favorite restaurants.  We headed back to the Michigan Upper Peninsula at the end of the week, and then south to Oshkosh.  We had one week to do some catch up at home,  see our eye doctor for our yearly checkups, and start packing to leave.  It was time for our yearly trip to Door County Wisconsin.  Door County is on the peninsula north of Green Bay.   With Green Bay on one side and Lake Michigan on the other there are scenic views everywhere.  On the upper part of the peninsula they have carefully tried to promote local business and keep the ‘big boys’ out.  We have many favorites from close to 50 years of visits.  Our 2 weeks went quickly and we did not visit all of our favorites.   But enough to eat and drink much more than we should in that amount of time!   MJ was with us and our niece Denise and her husband Jason.  We celebrated Jason being done with chemo and declared cancer free.  I managed to get in some rounds of golf at my favorite course plus some extra rounds at other places.  It was a great time and good to have Jeff and Donna with us for a week and John and Debbie spent a couple of days in Door.   We were home for the start of August and tried to take advantage of the time to catch up with our Oshkosh friends.  We do have friends here that we take much enjoyment spending time with.  We thank them for spending time with us.  Life is fun, and we are blessed to enjoy it.   This last weekend we were in Milwaukee for Irish Fest, another long term celebration we take part in.  Constant music on 16 stages, there is always something new to find.   We had chances to spend time with many old friends.  It was supposed to be cloudy with good chances of rain according to the weatherman,   but we spent many hours in the sun.  Of course I told Chris we would not need any sunscreen this weekend!   Jeff and Donna joined us for the full weekend and we stayed at the same hotel downtown.  It did rain on Friday night but it was not a problem since there are so many great places to eat and drink in downtown Milwaukee.  And we did.   After a great breakfast this morning we are now home.   My homebrew club has their annual picnic Wednesday, then on Thursday we are off to the north.  Another annual rite of summer is our trip to Canada.   We are looking forward to seeing Homer and Judy and Ron and Verna this next week.  We are also thinking of our friends in the NorthEast.  Ernesto missed Florida but is wreaking havoc there.  We hope you are all doing well and enjoying your summer.

2024 June 21

So we arrived home to Oshkosh with little fanfare May 17! Everything was fine at the apartment, but we knew that because Mark had kept an eye on it for us. When the battery was connected to the Oshkosh car it started right up. So all was good, and then into a couple of days of unpacking and reacquainting ourselves with the apartment. We have caught up with some old friends and I have gotten some golf time in. Good to be back. Still more catching up to do but we were going to Denver for a wedding. We went to see our good friend’s, Bev and Wally’s son Travis, tie the knot in Colorado. So off we were. We booked a direct flight from Appleton to Denver and arrived to spend some time with Bev and Wally in Denver. Travis and his fiance invited us to their house that night for a grill out and some drinks. After a wonderful evening the next morning we were off for Bailey, Colorado. Chris and I booked an Airbnb near the wedding venue, our first Airbnb. There were not many options in the area and we did not want to commute the 50 minutes in from Denver. It worked out great. A very nice mountain get-away, tastefully remodeled and comfortable. We found some good food along the way (have you ever been to a place where you can get a flight of Mac n cheese?) and a winery started by a Swiss immigrant. But those were the side notes. The big event was at a beautiful site. A few drops of rain fell before the ceremony and then stopped, and the sky cleared. The wedding in the gazebo was heartfelt and we believe the couple will be together for a lifetime. A good time was had by all. Then the next morning we were back on the road. From Bailey we headed south to Albuquerque. We have driven from Denver to ABQ before but this time we were already West, so Hwy 285 goes south most of the way to Sante Fe. It was an interesting and picturesque route on a nice day in the mountains. 9180 feet and higher, so much higher than Denver or Albuquerque. We arrived at Marie’s about 7 hours later and ready for a beer. We spent a few days catching up with Marie and taking care of a few items with her. On Thursday it was time to fly again. Albuquerque is not an easy place to fly in and out of, there are not many options. So we took what we could get. An early afternoon flight to Chicago and then on to Appleton. I have avoided Chicago for over 30 years and I like to get an earlier start; but none available. Even with some gusty winds and storms near by we were off on time and into O’Hare on time. I had booked with lot’s of time to the next takeoff, knowing what things are in todays airport world and never sure we would be off on time. So we landed, but I had started receiving texts about changes to another Appleton flight, not sure why. So when we landed we made our way to our next gate and asked the question of a gate attendent who had no idea, but our seats on our original flight were still good. We went for a bite to eat and a note popped up on my American Airlines app offering bonus points for us to book the other flight. So I hit the buttom to apply for that (we were there and could leave early). While eating our snack texts keep coming changing from 6:40, to 7:12, to 7:30. Our booked flight was 8:12. When done with the snack we walked to the alternate gate, no one around so we thought we could sit there for awhile. Eventually someone showed up and when I asked if we were on the list for the earlier flight the answer was “we don’t know because right now we don’t know when either flight will leave or which one first”. So I did some research and it looked like the earlier flight plane should land around 8 and the one we were booked on around 8:40. We hung around (with no updates from the customer service desk) and a plane did show up around 8. They deboarded and cleaned and started boarding , the messages from American said they would make an announcement on the stand-bys, so I waited patiently. When it was pretty full Chris said there were two people who she thought just got added to the plane, so I listened to her and we went up and asked, again. The attendent seemed clueless, but did check the plane when I asked if it was full, and then gave us boarding passes. The hell with the luggage, it was time to take any flight out of Chicago when we could. So happily we were off the tarmac and on the way. A very short flight to Appleton and pleasant landing in small airport. Now home and having a bourbon. A long story for a short part of a great trip!

We left Champaign Urbana on a beautiful morning after heavy rains the evening before.  We had a 5 hour drive and took our usual breaks on the way.  We came out of fields in the south that the corn and other crops were up and growing.   Now going north they were just tilling and planting.  As you go north you notice the changes in the growing season.   Even though the weather seems to have been above normal back in Wisconsin this winter the difference is still there.  It was good to see the plowed fields and trees green.  And lilacs are blooming!  We remember our lilac bushes and how my grandfather taught me to trim off the old blooms once they were done.  We do miss the smell of fresh lilacs in the house.   As we got closer we felt more anxious to see home.  An uneventful last leg, which was welcome.   The whole country is in full construction mode.  We had a number of delays on the way but nothing terrible.  Just life. Luckily nothing on the last day.  It was another great road trip.  So we are settling back into Oshkosh.  Mark and Terry took us out for a local meal and we tasted some of the great beer Mark left me from our fall brew.   And now to settle back in.  Cleaning bugs off the car and starting to stock some food.  Still saying prayers for our friends that travel and those back in Snug.   And looking forward to catching up with friends we have not seen for 7 months.

2024, Thursday May 16

After a wonderful night at the Beaumont Inn, we  had a tasty breakfast and were ready to hit the road again.    Heading northwest towards Louisville  and West on I-64.   We had a plan for a stop along the way.  Saint Meinrad Archabbey in Indiana.   While doing some research for cousin Charles I ran across this Abbey.   In 1852 a priest serving the wilds of Indiana was searching for German speaking priests to serve the area, and reached out to the Maria Einsiedeln Switzerland Benedictine Monks for help.  They sent Fathers Ulrich Christen and Bede O’Conner to Southern Indiana.  Later they added Martin Marty from Canton Schwyz; a promising young monk.      Einsiedeln by the way is where Chris’s Grandmother was born and we have been back to visit cousins Charles and Walter and their families.  And we have been to the Mother abbey in Einsiedeln Switzerland.   A nice connection.  Father Marty went on to become a leader in the Catholic Church in the United States and his prowess in dealing with people and his business prowess led the Saint Meinrad’s Abbey to become one of two archabbeys in the nation and one of 11 in the world.  It is a beautiful campus, certainly being there in spring must help the impression.  The only thing that could have been better was if they had decided to brew beer to support the Abbey.  (Like the Monks of Nursia in Italy, another Benedictine Monastery).  So I find the history interesting and have more reading to do.  And will look for more links to the Einsiedeln links in the Cincinnati to Louisville area.   So after some relaxing time at the abbey we were back on the road.   We had not pre booked a hotel for this leg since we were not sure of the timing and how long we wanted to be in the car.   We decided we were up for a longer ride than usual and headed for Champaign Urbana Illinois.  We took the GPS quickest route which included asphalted cow paths such as crooked snake road.   But the timing was as promised and luckily we did not meet oncoming traffic on some of those roads.  It was scenic and as we made our way into Illinois and the Central time zone it became flatter and more agricultural.  Huge farm fields.   They have had too much rain here, but some corn fields are doing well.   So now we have had a meal and some cocktails at the hotel, and are preparing for tomorrow.

After a fun Night in Winter Garden we shared in a nice breakfast at the B&B. Certainly not premade eggs in a warming tray! Some coffee and conversation and we were on our way. It was warm and sunny in Florida, a little over 2 hours later the rain started and the temperatures started dropping. True to forecast there were no storms just steady rain for the next couple of hours. When we landed in Forsyth Georgia there were only a few drops, but it was in the mid 60’s and breezy. It did not feel good! But check in was easy and we took a short breather. Then 5 minutes into town we went to Fox City Brewery for a little something to eat. Located in a building that was once a yarn factory they have made it inviting with multiple drink and dining areas flanking the brew area. Nice food and drink. That set us for the night, and the next day a short ride into Atlanta. That was the plan, I wanted to visit the Jimmy Carter Presidential Museum in Atlanta and this left us less than a 2 hour drive into Atlanta. Even mid morning the Atlanta traffic is terrible. But we made it in as planned. We would say that the LBJ museum in Austin was more impactful for us, but this was still well done. Lot’s of memories for us. Then on to the World of Coca Cola Atlanta. Another fun couple of hours, lot’s of memorabilia and fun facts. And you can taste more cola products than you can ever taste. From there on to our hotel close by. A number of years ago we had a great experience at Ted’s Montana Grill in Tallahassee. So we did Ted’s in Atlanta, On Ted Turner Drive. It did not disappoint. My Bison NY Strip was wonderful. And at the hotel I had tasty smoked Old Fashioned’s. More than I probably should have!! The next morning on to one of our ‘longer’ drives, over 6 hours. We left Atlanta and headed to Harrodsburg KY. We stayed here before and it is a favorite. So we checked in after our ‘long’ day of driving. Time to switch out some clothes between our carry in bags and what was stored in the car. And then into the restaurant to start some relaxing. https://www.beaumontinn.com

2024, Sunday May 12

Well we decided it was time. Our Spring trip home. We had a great winter, with lot’s of social time with good friends. Golf and grill outs and pool time. Most of our neighbors have headed home already and for us to get home before Memorial Day it is time to get started. So the last week was organizing and preparing. We made it to our favorite Brewery to say good by and shared some beers with friends. Also had our last cocktails and cigars in the courtyard. So today we took our time and packed the car and prepared the condo to be empty for many months. We planned on a short ride knowing we had a number of tasks to complete. So leaving around noon we traveled to Winter Garden just outside Orlando. We are staying in the Edgewater Hotel, a historic hotel. It is full of character. Built in 1926 it has the original charm but has been tastefully updated. Winter Garden has a wonderful cobblestone street downtown full of shops and restaurants. A laid back vibe. We were lucky enough to have some Enders spend time with us to make it a beautiful evening. So breakfast in the dining area in the morning and then off for day 2.
